Piedmont

The wine region of Piedmont is located in Northwestern Italy near the boarders of France and Switzerland. This premier region is primarily known for production of the Nebbiolo grape which is used to make the lengendary wines of Barolo & Barbaresco. Nebbiolo can be an extremely tannic and acidic varietal and must be allowed to mature for decades in bottle to reach peak drinkability.  While Nebbiolo is king of Piedmont, Barbera, Dolcetto, & Moscato are also grown here. Moscato is unique to the region in that it is frequently made into sparkling wine called Asti Spumante. Wine grapes are grown all over Piedmont, but Barolo is considered the most prestigious region as its clay and marlstone soils serve to slightly mellow the acidity of the Nebbiolo grape. Barbaresco soil contains more limestone which can serve to lessen harsh tannin making these wines slightly more accessible when young. Piedmont produces some of the best wine in all of Italy and should be in every wine drinker's cellar.
