New York

Wine production first began in New York State way back in the 17th century, yet commercial production did not take off until some time later in the 1800's. Today New York State is third behind California and Washington in total grape production, although 80% of the vineyard land is planted to Vitis Labrusca which is primarily used for grape juice.  New York is home to America’s first bonded winery and also boasts the country's oldest continuously operating winery.  One of the most prestigious wine regions in New York State is The Finger Lakes appellation, which located in the northwestern portion of the state near lake Ontario. This cool-climate growing zone is known primarily for production of Riesling and is said to resemble Alsace in both climate and blue slate soil. The Finger Lakes AVA benefits from a string of glacial lakes that serve as moderating influences, and protect the vineyards by insulating them in the winter and cooling them down in the summer. Besides just Riesling - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc are very successful products of the Finger Lakes. Long Island another New York growing zone producing high quality wine, and the region's maritime climate even allows for Bordeaux varieties to thrive.
