The Loire Valley is unique wine region in central France that follows the path of the Loire River starting just south of Paris and heading west. It can be broken into three sections - the upper, middle, and lower Loire. The Lower Loire is the most westward and coastal of the three and has significant maritime influence. It is home to the varietals Melon De Bourgogne, Pinot Gris, & Folle Blanche. The Middle Loire sits a bit further east and produces some of the best Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc in the world. Furthest east in the Upper Loire Sauvignon Blanc thrives, primarily in the prestigious Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé appelations. Wine from the Loire Valley is known for intense minerality and excellent expression of terroir, as the cool climate and unique soils of each sub-region express themselves distinctly into earth yet refreshing wines with wonderful acidity.
