2019 Sancerre Rosé - J. de Villebois
Delicate strawberry, crushed limestone, crisp watermelon. Rainier cherry, rose water, crunchy white nectarine. Tense and tingling vibrations of white raspberry, Pink Lady apple, and grapefruit zest beam with enviable verve and vibrancy while bolstered in freshness by suggestions of mint leaf, broken stones, and ground Himalayan sea salt. Gentle wafts of jasmine, lavender, and white blossoms reveal a layer of dainty floral perfume playfully enhanced by hints of rubbed sage and lightly herbal underpinnings. Notes of chalk and calcareous rock fervently emerge carrying pronounced streaks of mineral earthiness that writhe throughout the linear yet surprisingly expressive attack. Clean, bone dry, and exceptionally precise on the palate while remaining full-flavored and feisty; exhibiting wonderful bursts of zesty crispness that do not detract from complexity and expression of place. Medium in body and carried by beautifully high acidity. This 2019 Sancerre Rosé by J. de Villebois is an impressively well made, elegant, and spirited rosé from France's Loire Valley.
Though primarily known for the racy and intense Sauvignon Blanc grown on its marl and flint covered hillsides, the French Village of Sancerre also produces small amounts of red wine and rosé that are similarly unique and compelling. This bottling, crafted by J. de Villebois using Pinot Noir grown in Sancerre and vinified as a rosé, captures the infamous energy and earthiness of this legendary old world terroir expressed through a unique yet delicious lens. This wine contains a bright core of energetic red, white, and yellow fruits enhanced by delicate flowers, subtle herbs, and a powerful wallop of minerality. It is juicy and delicious while remaining incredibly focused and classic, certainly warranting similar attention as is given to this region's unquestionably special whites.
