Suisun Valley

The Suisun Valley appellation is located in Solano County, California. It sits just east of Napa Valley opposite the Vaca Mountains that is part of the Coast Range, which spans 400 miles from Humboldt County all the way to the south of Santa Barbara. The Suisun Valley AVA was established in the 1980’s and making it one of the first official AVAs created in all of California. It experiences a semi-coastal Mediterranean climate with significant cooling influence from the marine air creeping up from the San Pablo Bay to its south. Soils in the Suisun Valley are a typically collection of sedimentary rocks composed mainly of sandstone and shale. There are currently around 3,000 acres of vineyards planted in the Suisun Valley and a large majority of the grapes grown here go to wineries located in either Napa Valley or Sonoma. Since its climate is quite similar to Napa Valley many of the same grape varieties succeed here, and Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux grapes tend to be the most prominent.
