Organic dark cherry, broken slate, fresh rhubarb. Wild blackberry, forest floor, mixed currants…
Germany has a long and noble history of wine production dating back to as early as 70 AD. Boasting steep black slate hillsides and soft rolling hills of lime and clay, Germany is blessed with some of the most interesting and distinctive terroir in the world. A vast variety of different styles of wine are produced here including dry & sweet white, rose, red, & even sparkling wine which is called Sekt. The majority of vineyards in Germany are planted to white grapes which ripen more easily in this relatively cool climate. More recently, partially thanks to the effects of climate change, red varietals have been gaining traction across the country. Spätburgunder, German for Pinot Noir, is quickly growing in recognition and critical acclaim as the varietals ability to produce unique terroir driven wines is realized on German soil. Riesling is the king of German white grapes, but Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris, or Silvaner are also quite popular. The best German wine can age and improve for many decades and can be on-par in quality with the world's best. If you like refreshing acidity and laser-like focus you will love the terrific wines that Germany is putting out.
