2018 “The Daily August” Rheingau Pinot Noir - August Kesseler
Organic dark cherry, broken slate, fresh rhubarb. Wild blackberry, forest floor, mixed currants. Incredibly lifted and layered waves of tart blueberry, juicy cranberry, and blood orange peel highlight an earthy yet remarkably expressive fruit core deeply imprinted with wonderful natural notes of tree bark, tobacco leaf, pine, and oolong tea. Hints of cherry blossom, plucked rose petal, and jasmine swiftly materialize within wafts of pretty floral perfume offset by intriguing herbal and spiced impressions of cinnamon, black pepper, anise, and caraway seed. Suggestions of gunpowder, matchstick, and smoke reveal interesting lightly reductive and soil-influenced complexity writhing with streaks of gorgeously dark minerality. Highly pure, aromatic, and mysterious on the nose while remaining complex and multidimensional yet perfectly weightless on the palate; exhibiting an outstanding mix of fruit, earth, and savory components while remaining authentic to type and terroir. Barely medium plus in body with moderate soft tannin cut by elevated acidity. This 2018 "The Daily August" Rheingau Pinot Noir by August Kesseler is a tremendously captivating and well balanced red from Germany.
Although it once possessed far too cold of a climate to grow high quality Pinot Noir, Germany has seen temperatures consistently rise during the growing season throughout the last few decades which has allowed more and more red wine to be produced throughout the country. This bottling, crafted by August Kesseler using Pinot Noir sourced from within the legendary region of Rheingau, brilliantly captures this newfound combination of one of the world's most legendary grapes and terroirs. This wine elegantly beams with a range of tart yet surprisingly ripe black and red fruits laden with complex slate-driven earthiness, beautiful natural notes, lifted spices, and gorgeous floral perfume. It perfectly captures the character of its region while still remaining accessible and delicious, and for the price may be once of the greatest Pinot Noir values on the planet. Outstanding.
