Temecula Valley is one of Southern California's most well known and recognizable winegrowing zones. It is located in Riverside County between Los Angeles County, San Diego County, and Orange County. Modern winegrowing in Temecula Valley began in the 1960's when this area became known for its plantings of Mediterranean grape varieties like Sangiovese. Temecula Valley is a warm climate region and is one of the hottest growing zones in the state. Summers in Temecula see very little rainfall, yet thanks to the nearby Pacific Ocean it is common for sea mist and cool air to flow into the valley at night moderating temperatures. Thanks to hot days, cool nights, and soils laden with sand, iron, and granite, Temecula Valley is now home to successful plantings of Rhone varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel. Because of its close proximity to major Southern California cities Temecula Valley has become a sizeable tourist attraction and a popular destination for weddings. Although some wineries here have shifted their focus entirely to catering to tourism, there are some impressive quality-oriented producers growing excellent wine in the Temecula Valley
