Sonoma

The first wine grapes were planted in Sonoma County California in 1812 by Spanish Missionaries near what is now the city of Sonoma. Located just north of San Francisco and immediately west of Napa Valley, Sonoma County is currently one of the largest wine producing zones in all of California. Because it borders the Pacific Ocean to its west the climate of Sonoma County varies significantly in each sub-region. Full bodied reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel thrive in the eastern AVA's of Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Knights Valley.  Meanwhile high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are being produced in droves in the Russian River Valley, Green Valley, and Fort Ross-Seaview AVA's. The diversity in microclimates here allow for a wonderful diversity in wine styles, making Sonoma one of the best places in California to visit for those looking to try a wide variety of wines without needing to travel a large geographical distance.
