Despite being one of the world's largest consumers of wine Great Britain has for most of recorded history had virtually no domestic wine production. Due to the region's cold & wet climate and close proximity to France the British were for a long time content with simply importing their wine. More recently, thanks to global warming and better understanding of viticulture, more and more wineries have begun popping up throughout England and Scotland. Three main wine regions of Surrey, Sussex, and Kent have emerged areas of high potential. Plantings here are primarily Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, & Meunier which are typically used to produce sparkling wine. Due to cool nights and Champagne/Chablis-esque chalky soils English sparkling wine is making a name for itself as a convincing Champagne alternative. If you're a fan of sparkling wine you owe it to yourself to give English bubbly a try!
