Located between Austria, Slovenia, and the Adriatic Sea in in Northeastern corner of Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a unique cool to moderate climate wine region that is the source of some of Italy's most complex high-acid white wines in addition to great deal of distinct and compelling reds. This region contains multiple interesting sub-appellations of which Friuli Grave and Colli Orientali Del Friuli are particularly notable. Friuli Grave, the region's largest producing DOCGs, sits in a flat valley with high concentrations of stones that heat up during the day and cool down drastically at night, which allow for optimal ripening while maintaining high acidity. Colli Orientali Del Friuli is considerably more hilly and is known for being rich in "Ponca", a unique sedimentary soil comprised of sandstone and marl, that imparts its wines with palpable minerality. Throughout Friuli-Venezia Giulia it is common to see plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio in addition to the region's many indigenous white and red grape varieties. Friuli-Venezia Giuli is also notable as an epicenter of orange wine production as many of its local producers regularly experiment with using skin-contact in winemaking.
