Clarksburg is a very small wine growing zone located in Northern California just south of Sacramento. Wine has been produced here since the 19th century, and Clarksburg received appellation status in the 1980’s. The Clarksburg AVA actually contains parts of three counties: Sacramento County, Solano County, & Yolo County. It sits along the San Joaquin River Delta near the banks of the Sacramento River. The river delta aids in the production of quality wine by funneling cool wind and fog into the area's vineyards, effectively mellowing otherwise hot temperatures. Soils in Clarksburg are typically composed of sandy loam, silt, & clay and are relatively fertile and moisture-rich. A wide variety of grape varieties are known to thrive here and can typically be produced in a variety of styles ranging from lean and crisp to rich and ripe. Most of fruit grown in Clarksburg is actually sold and vinified in other wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, although a number of local wineries are beginning to gain critical recognition.
