White peach, flower bud, meyer lemon. Sliced kiwi, morning dew, candied lime. Honeysuckle and wet grass, stainless steel and river stones. Green pear and grapefruit flesh muddle with chopped cilantro to produce an aromatic and energetic bouquet. Mineral yet multidimensional with booming fruit benefiting from overt clean grassy notes. This 2015 Danube Valley Sauvignon Blanc by Twickel Szőlőbirtok is an impressive offering from the Szekszárd region of Hungary.

Located in Southern Hungary just a 2 hour drive away from Budapest, Szekszárd is one of Hungary's largest agricultural zones. In addition to traditional food crops Szekszárd also has a long history of wine production that can be traced back well over 2000 years. A number of native grape varieties grow in this warm climate region, but more recently Bordeaux varieties have gained tremendous popularity. This bottling, crafted by the family winery Twickel Szőlőbirtok (which translates as Twickel Vineyard), is an intriguing glimpse into what Szekszárd can do. It contains the genuine mineral earthy tones of old world Sauv Blanc with a ripe but dry fruit profile and distinct pyrazines. We didn't know what to expect out of this bottle, and we walked away totally stoked. Very little wine from Szekszárd makes its way to the USA, but this stuff is available courtesy of PB Importers.
