Muddled raspberry, green peppercorn, fresh mission fig. Spicy boysenberry, chopped fennel, slightly bruised peach. Prickly briar and bougainvillea, saddle leather and cigar box. Tart and crunchy berries rife with bramble and peppery spice erupt with considerable intensity; clearly unafraid to flaunt tense elderberry, strawberry, and cherry pit sprinkled with anise and white sage. Shrubby chaparral interjects bringing with it a feral edge further complicated by wild violet and prickly pear. Parched earth, dusty trail, and buffalo hide underlie the kirsch-laden attack contributing tremendous western charm that hearkens back to glory days of old. Fresh and lean despite obvious depth and concentration; full bodied with assertive tannin and gorgeously elevated acidity. This 2017 "And We All Grow Old" Evangelho Vineyard Red by T-Vine Winery is a remarkable old vine blend from one of California's most interesting vineyards.
Situated directly between a powerplant and a Burger King in Contra Costa County the Evangelho Vineyard is a relic of days gone. Although the surrounding area was once widely planted to grape vines most were ripped out long ago to help quench the bay area's rabid thirst for development. Thankfully this vineyard and its nearly 140 year old vines have so far survived the plight of urban sprawl and continue to produce absolutely amazing wine. This bottling, crafted using 72% Carignane and 28% Mataro all sourced from the Evangelho Vineyard, is a major testament to the preservation of California's most unique heritage vineyards. It is amazingly characterful and transparent, possessing not only remarkably suave & serious fruit but also impressive wild & earthy nuances. It is balanced, complex, and packed full of a certain unexplainable x-factor. This is an outstanding wine that is authentic, terroir driven, and just plain special.
