Wild blackberry, crushed rosemary, smoked red meat. Gooey fig, spice box, seasoned wood. Fragrant thyme and sage, black pepper and dried habanero. Earthy purple potato and crumbly gravel sit deep below a fragrant medley of savory spices and juicy dripping beef. Herb & pepper crusted prime rib cooked rare and smothered in au jous. This 2015 Gimblett Gravels Syrah by Trinity Hill Wines will have you salivating and licking your chops.

The Hawkes Bay wine growing region is the oldest in New Zealand. Wine grapes were first planted here in 1851 and the area has been known for high quality wine production ever since. Located on the east coast of NZ's north island, Hawkes Bay was carved out over time by shifting rivers and benefits from significant maritime influences. The Gimblett Gravels sub AVA is slightly inland and possesses soils of almost pure gravel. The temperature here is slightly warmer here than in the rest of Hawkes Bay and has aided it in becoming a premier locale for growing both Bordeaux and Rhone Varietals. This wine, produced by Trinity Hill Wines, is packed full of saturated meaty tones and intense spice. At only 13.0% ABV it feels light on its feet despite the obvious concentration. New Zealand is not typically known for producing high-end Syrah, but perhaps it should be.
