2018 “1772” Edna Ranch Pinot Noir - Tolosa Winery

Plump bing cherry, candied rose petal, farm stand strawberry. Cranberry cocktail, turned earth, orange slice. Juicy pomegranate and crushed raspberry seamlessly intertwine with fresh forest floor and red spring flowers in an a remarkably pure and radiant aromatic display. Ethereal complexity continues unabated thanks to impressions of cardamom, coriander, nutmeg, and earthy spices that rise above seductive notes of damp moss, white mushroom, and tree bark. Distinct mineral tones of calcareous rock complete the gorgeously expansive attack with terroir-driven brilliance. Young, primary, and packed with astounding depth of fruit that manages to remain seductively weightless and bright despite haunting concentration and complexity. Medium plus in body with moderate tannin and wonderfully elevated acidity. This 2018 "1772" Edna Ranch Pinot Noir by Tolosa Winery is an alluring and incredibly thought-provoking red from the Edna Valley.

Located in cool coastal San Luis Obispo County directly south of Paso Robles and just a few miles from the sea, Edna Valley is one of California's coldest and most interesting winegrowing appellations. This bottling, crafted by Tolosa Winery using Pinot Noir sourced from their estate Edna Ranch Vineyard in the Edna Valley, marvelously showcases the immense potential of this inimitable region. While fragrantly perfumed and at times even bordering on hedonistic this wine remains remarkably cerebral and serious, and its ripe yet delicate complexion reveals sensations only possible in the most ideal terroir. This is a captivating wine that deserves at least 5 years of cellar age to unfurl further yet is absolutely irresistible now. An outstanding offering from a very exciting producer and region.
