2018 “1772” Edna Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay - Tolosa Winery
Fresh Meyer lemon, salted caramel, honeycrisp apple. Pineapple flesh, fragrant jasmine, almost-ripe peach. A remarkably pure and precise fruit core led by nectarine, citrus peel, and Bosc pear whirls with incredibly delicate expressiveness aided by hints of brioche, cashew, and cool ocean froth. Wafts of French vanilla, nutmeg, and clove emerge to reveal a thread of pretty yet dainty spice offset by terroir-focused bursts of sea spray, beach break, and saline minerality. Fresh honeysuckle and a medley of lighthearted floral tones reassert waves of gentle lift while subtle impressions of croissant, marshmallow dust, and Greek yogurt impart a pleasant and lightly decadent sheen. Impressively clean and vibrant on the nose while simultaneously expansive yet crisp on the palate; exhibiting delightfully subdued power along with exceptional balance and refinement that comes off as both intellectual and indulgent. Medium in body and supported by elevated yet understated acidity. This 2018 "1772" Edna Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay by Tolosa Winery is an outstandingly elegant, classic, and complex white from California's Edna Valley.
Located on the San Luis Obispo coast between Santa Barbara and Monterey, the Edna Valley is one of California's coldest marine-influenced winegrowing regions and produces a great deal of absolutely spectacular wine. This bottling, crafted by Tolosa Winery using Chardonnay grown at their estate Edna Ranch Vineyard, beautifully captures the cool coastal character of this incredibly picturesque region. This wine contains a subtly ripe and bright backbone of fruit wrapped in gorgeously saline terroir, light florals, and baking spice. It remains Californian in style while still quite serious and restrained; eschewing excess ripeness in pursuit of balance and freshness. Excellent.
