2019 “1772” Edna Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay - Tolosa Winery

Golden delicious apple, ground nutmeg, ripe pineapple. Lemon curd, buttered croissant, juicy Bartlett pear. An enticingly plump and succulent parade of mango, Mirabelle plum, and orange zest bounds with remarkable purity and expressiveness within a round yet highly energetic attack. Notes of blooming honeysuckle, jasmine, and peonies proudly assert lofty floral leanings while dustings of cinnamon and French vanilla contribute a range of pristine baking spices. Hints of whipped cream, brioche, and angel food cake gently expose mild creamy and bready decadence that is offset by clean and crisp bursts of sea spray and saline minerality. Impressively deep and concentrated on the palate while remaining polished, elegant, and exceptionally well balanced; exhibiting a bright yet bold presentation that is unquestionably pretty and seductive. Medium-plus bodied and packed with elevated acidity. This 2019 "1772" Edna Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay by Tolosa Winery is a complex and classy white from San Luis Obispo's Edna Valley.

Although it has the capability of producing ripe and fruit-forward wines thanks to the consistent California sunshine it experiences, the Edna Valley has a uniquely cool coastal climate that helps to retain excellent tension and acidity in its wines. This bottling, crafted by Tolosa Winery using Chardonnay sourced from its estate Edna Ranch Vineyard in the Edna Valley, brilliantly captures the combination of breadth and bite that this region's best whites are known for. This booms with a medley of rich orchard, citrus, and tropical fruits that are laced with gorgeous florals, pretty oak spice, delicious creaminess, and textbook coastal minerality. It is enjoyable today yet also possesses the tension and verve for moderate-term cellaring, and would be very interesting to revisit in 3-5 years. Excellent.
