2018 Rosemary’s Vineyard Chardonnay - Talley Vineyards
Zesty Meyer Lemon, bright jasmine, Fuji apple. Juicy peach, crushed granite, barely-ripe honeydew melon. Pineapple juice, Bartlett pear, and citrus peel converge with white flowers and clove in an impressively vibrant and high-energy attack. Orange blossom and honeysuckle further augment nicely floral overtones bolstered by complicating impressions of nutmeg and white sage. A unique chalky minerality emerges on the palate providing incredible texture without excess weight or breadth, injecting itself in magnificently behind the initial rush of electric and zingy fruit. Slight leesy and bready notes plus a nice pinch of salinity round out the tight, tart, and terrifically restrained profile that expands and fills out as it breathes and warms in the glass. Medium in body, revealing only minor influence of barrel aging, and backed by wonderfully high acidity. This 2018 Rosemary's Vineyard Chardonnay by Talley Vineyards is a racy, complex, and delicious white from the Arroyo Grande Valley.
Located in San Luis Obispo county just east of Pismo Beach and directly south of the Edna Valley, the Arroyo Grande Valley appellation is part of a string of Central California's most interesting coastal viticultral zones. This bottling, crafted by Talley Vineyards using Chardonnay sourced from their estate Rosemary's Vineyard, is an outstanding representation of this small yet incredible region. Coming from a rather cold site just 6 miles from the coast, this wine pulses with tremendous tension and nerve along with subtly ripe qualities that serve to balance out a thrilling vein of acidity. While it's lively and spunky characteristics are an absolute pleasure to enjoy now this wonderful wine should develop spectacularly with a half-decade or more of bottle age. An unquestionably impressive offering from Talley.
