2020 Albariño - Springfield Estate
Freshly squeezed lemon, sea salt, sour green apple. Ripe kiwi, sage brush, tart passion fruit. An arrestingly intense and nervy attack led by orange oil, loquat, and key lime booms with impressive concentration and verve within a powerfully crisp and zippy display. Notes of oyster shell, ocean brine, and crushed stones emphatically emerge to provide highly saline and mineral undertones which add a pronounced earthy twist to the bright and boisterous fruit. Hints of citrus blossom and wildflowers gently reveal soft floral character that is largely offset by lightly savory impressions of tarragon, fennel, and wild herbs. Puckeringly tart and tangy on the palate with heaps of youthful energy and bite; exhibiting a zingy and mouth-tickling presentation that maintains excellent depth despite its vigor. Medium bodied and brimming with ripping acidity. This 2020 Albariño by Springfield Estate is a tense and edgy white from Robertson South Africa.
Native to the Spanish region of Galicia where it is found in the crisp coastal whites of Rías Baixas, Albariño is a well-loved international variety that is more frequently being planted in marine-influenced regions all across the globe. This bottling, crafted by Springfield Estate using Albariño grown in their estate vineyards in South Africa's Western Cape, is an intriguing example of what this variety can achieve South Africa's warm yet coastal climate. This wine beams with intensely tart and energetic citrus and tropical fruits framed alongside highly saline mineral tones, soft florals, and interesting herbal qualities. For those who enjoy extremely crisp and zippy whites this is ready to enjoy right away, although a year or two in bottle would help calm the powerful acidity. Very good.
