2015 El Dorado “Eighteen Sixty-One” GSM blend - Skinner Vineyards
Red plum skin, pumpkin puree, fresh raspberry. Bruised red apple, crushed wilted rose, dried cherry. Powdered nutmeg and rosemary, cool granite and dry rock. Surprising acidity and dusty grainy tannin provide plenty of "Umph" behind spiced fruit and light florals. Think Thanksgiving dinner with warm seasoned sides and some delicious homemade pie. This 2015 El Dorado "Eighteen Sixty-One" GSM blend by Skinner Vineyards is an excellent representation of California's Sierra Foothills.
The original home of California's gold rush, the El Dorado AVA is located east of Sacramento at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Wine production here has been going on practically since the gold rush began in 1849 although the AVA was only officially established in 1983. Vineyards in this appellation are typically located at high elevations and benefit from a significant alpine cooling influence. This wine, produced by Skinner Vineyards, shows what makes this region so special. The blend of 54% Grenache, 34% Mourvedre, and 12% Syrah shows bright fruit, earthy spiced notes, and terrific structure. Most regions in California just don't get this level of acidity and tannin in a Grenache based blend without reaching ultra-high levels of alcohol. While not the most highly recognizable region the Sierra Foothills are quietly putting out fantastic wine worthy of attention and acclaim.
