2001 Berg Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese - Schloss Schönborn
Ripe peach, spilled petrol, dehydrated lime flesh. Granny Smith apple, candied ginger, tart passionfruit. Bright honeysuckle and acacia flower, sauteed mushroom and tree root. Hauntingly aromatic fruit and funk explode in a bouquet packed with honeydew, apricot, and kerosene that writhe with unapologetic intensity. White tulip and clean florals contribute delicately gorgeous perfume aided by fresh mint leaf, dried honeycomb, and kiss of botrytis influenced spice. Extraordinarily high toned and expansive containing oodles of bright primary fruit that collide beautifully and violently with expressive tertiary nuances and cool slate minerality. Tart, zippy, and startlingly dry, sitting at medium in body with high acidity that drives an attack of remarkable precision and balance. Tremendously complex while still coming off quite young and fresh. This 2001 Berg Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese by Schloss Schönborn is an outstanding aged aromatic white from Germany.
The steep slopes of the village of Rüdesheim located along the Rhine river in Germany's Rheingau region have long been known to produce some of the world's very best Riesling. This bottling, crafted by historic producer Schloss Schönborn using Riesling sourced from the Berg Schlossberg Vineyard and vinified in a dry style, is an absolutely tremendous example of why German wine is so highly revered. It is unbelievably complex and delicious, showcasing ripe yet fresh and tart fruit along with spectacular development from its many years resting in bottle. This wine is extremely contemplative and fascinating to dissect yet remains astonishingly refreshing and drinkable. Just a wonderful wine that is an absolute thrill to taste and experience.
