2018 Crystal Springs Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc - Salvestrin Winery
Tart gooseberry, white rose, ripe green apple. Squeezed lime, crushed walnut shell, pineapple core. Elderflower and mint leaf, garden basil and newly cut grass. Fresh grapefruit and underripe peach collide with asparagus and bitter almond in a surprisingly savory and high-energy attack. Copper penny, sandy minerality, and subtle twang of iron cascade into frame interjecting ample amounts of terroir-driven earthiness to match complex fruit and herbs. Pretty and slightly pungent florals waft gently over the lot as pleasant salinity further beautifies the bouquet. Fresh, restrained, and impressively balanced; sitting at medium in body and featuring mild phenolic bite that rides a ferocious wave of high acidity. This 2018 Crystal Springs Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc by Salvestrin Winery is an exceptionally complex and delicious single vineyard white from Napa Valley.
The Salvestrin family moved to Napa Valley in 1932 - near the end of prohibition - when John and Emma Salvestrin purchased a portion of the Crane Ranch in Saint Helena. Once prohibition was repealed in 1933 the family found themselves in the wine business and they have continued in it uninterrupted ever since. This bottling, crafted by Salvestrin Winery using Sauvignon Blanc sourced from the Crystal Springs Vineyard in Santa Helena, is a remarkable example of the classically styled and balanced wine Napa became famous for many years ago. While it certainly possesses no shortage of bright and tart fruit this wine is not fruit-focused, rather it contains gorgeous herbal & pyrazinic character along with astoundingly nuanced earthiness that adds tremendous depth. Stylistically this wine is much closer to what one might expect from France than California, and is certainly one of the most delightful examples of Sauvignon Blanc we have enjoyed in some time.
