2018 “Possessioni” Rosso Verona - Serego Alighieri
Sweet cherry tomato, bay leaf, juicy red plum. Organic strawberry, rose petal, black licorice. Impressively authentic and unmanipulated bursts of raspberry, dried cherry, and grenadine lead a lively and thoroughly expressive attack that is brilliantly awash with fresh herbal notes of basil, fennel, and oregano. Hints of tobacco and forest floor swiftly emerge to enhance non-fruit complexity while further bolstered in savoriness by flecks of worn leather, iron, and dry loam. Wafts of cherry blossom and jasmine gently impart sweet and seductive floral perfume that flutters gracefully above the irresistibly bright and spirited display. Wonderfully deep and complex on the palate while showing outstanding restraint, refreshment, and drinkability; exhibiting an incredibly balanced and classically styled presentation that begs to be served alongside wood-fired pizza or homemade pasta. Medium in body with moderate tannin backed by mouth-watering acidity. This 2018 "Possessioni" Rosso Verona by Serego Alighieri is a unique and unquestionably delicious red from Italy.
Located along the western edge of the Veneto region beginning at its border with Lombardy, the province of Verona is perhaps best known for the powerful red wines of Amarone della Valpolicella which are made using the appassimento method. This bottling, crafted by Serego Alighieri using 70% Corvina/16% Sangiovese/14% Molinara sourced from their estate vineyards in Gargagnago di Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella, beautifully showcases a more restrained and food friendly interpretation of Verona red wine. This wine generously radiates an expressive fruit profile led by fresh and juicy red fruits, Italian herbs, lifted floral tones, and impressive savory character. Although tremendously complex and flavor-packed this remains exceptionally approachable, and makes for an exciting drinking experience both on its own and with food. Very nice.
