2020 Estate Rosemary’s Vineyard Pinot Noir - Talley Vineyards

Delightfully bright and aromatic bursts of tart pomegranate, goji berry, red cherry, and blood orange dance with enchantingly expressive brilliance as whirling waves of blooming rose and French lavender further enhance its haunting fragrance. Hints of cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg effortlessly unfurl an intriguing range of spices that rise above playful forest tones of pine cone, white sage, and dried leaves. A faint note of iron contributes just a pinch of pleasant rusticity while a splash of sea spray and saline minerality exposes clean coastal influence. Dazzlingly perfumed and pretty on the nose while remaining equally elegant and layered on the palate; exhibiting a thoroughly expansive yet perfectly restrained presentation that remains texturally soft, silky, and supple to compliment its inherent subtlety. Medium bodied with moderate tannin supported by elevated acidity. This 2020 Estate Rosemary's Vineyard Pinot Noir by Talley Vineyards is a delicate yet extraordinarily complex red from San Luis Obispo's Arroyo Grande Valley.

While the stylistic trends of the last few decades have tended to favor the production of big, rich, and powerful wines, some noble grapes like Pinot Noir require a more finesse-driven approach to reach their highest potential. This bottling, crafted by Talley Vineyards using Pinot Noir grown at their estate Rosemary's Vineyard, is a remarkable example of the merits of pursuing nuance and restraint over raw muscle or power. This leaps from the glass with gorgeous flutters of red berry fruits, fresh flowers, complex spices, herbal forest tones, and clean coastal earthiness. Although breathtaking today it is still very youthful in character, and will likely require at least another 5-10 years to hit its drinking peak where it should continue to drink well for decades. Outstanding.
