Pulverized dark cherry, sweet violet, spiced cranberry. Crunchy blackberry, salty gravel, orange concentrate. Crushed lavender and rose hip tea, ground cinnamon and wintergreen. Ripe strawberry and succulent mulberry lead a robust and powerful attack, bolstered by fragrant lilac and perfumed florals. Clean forest colludes with dried seaweed in a unique and intriguing collaboration complimented by nutmeg, rosemary needles, and Asian spice. Subtle notes of marine air course throughout while distinct rocky mineral tones writhe beneath the concentrated decadence. An audaciously forward fruit bonanza packed into a labyrinth of complexity and nuance. This 2017 Sierra Mar Vineyard Pinot Noir by Roar Wines is a bold and brooding beauty from the Santa Lucia Highlands.

California's Central Coast has courageously emerged as a powerhouse of Pinot Noir production. While there are many wonderful and unique growing zones along this stretch of coastline the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation, located in Monterey County at the base of the Santa Lucia Mountains, has distinguished itself as one of the premier zones for high-powered terroir-driven Pinot. This bottling, crafted from the Sierra Mar Vineyard by the pioneering Franscioni family of Roar Wines, is an immaculate example of this incredible region. It is well structured and extremely expressive, oozing soft tannin and pronounced acidity from its nearly full-bodied frame. Despite its amplitude this wine remains squarely in balance and never approaches sappy or cloying. It is is still very primary as its vintage would indicate and will benefit from a few years of cellar rest, but can still be enjoyed now in its youthful fortitude. Unabashedly flamboyant and stylistically striking, this wine is exactly what SLH Pinot Noir is all about.
