The wine region of Ribera del Duero is a well known quality-oriented growing zone located in northern Spain along the Douro River. Tempranillo is by far the most widely planted grape here and is known locally as Tinto Fino. The most popular wines of Ribera Del Duero are usually bold and age worthy reds which are fuller bodied and darker fruited than those from nearby Rioja. Soils in Ribera del Duero typically consist of layers of silty sand, limestone, and chalk. This region experiences a continental climate with summers that are long and dry and low temperatures in winter that can drop to near freezing. Similar to the wines of Rioja wine produced in Ribera del Duero is subject to strictly regulated labeling and aging requirements. Wines labeled Crianza must age for two years with 12 months in oak, Reserva aged for three years with 12 months of oak, and Gran Reserva must age for five years with two years being in oak. Ribera Del Duero boasts some of the most famous wineries in all of Spain - such as the legendary Vega Sicilia - and is considered by many to be one of Spain's top regions for red wine production.
