2017 “Claret” Ramey Wine Cellars

Raspberry compote, loose-leaf tobacco, strawberry glaze. Fresh blueberry, rose petal, plum cordial. A thoroughly ripe yet nicely restrained parade of blackberry reduction, Bing cherry, and cranberry sauce struts with simultaneous poise and swagger as hints of cedar, graham cracker, and nutmeg further bolster delightfully classic complexity. Expressive floral tones of crushed violet and potpourri emerge in a layer of sweet perfume that battles with exotic spice notes clove, cinnamon, and cumin for aromatic dominance. Gentle impressions of pine needle, damp forest floor, spearmint, and oolong tea provide understated yet captivating natural nuance while toasted vanilla and crème brûlée impart subtle yet seductive decadence. Pure, clean, and regal on the palate with notable concentration while remaining surprisingly delicate; exhibiting riveting velvety richness that is perfectly in balance and not the slightest bit weighty. Medium plus in body with pronounced yet soft tannin supported by elevated acidity. This 2017 "Claret" by Ramey Wine Cellars is a terrifically elegant and expressive red from California's North Coast.

Commonly used for many centuries as a nickname for the red wines of Bordeaux, Claret is a term that now can also refer to wines made elsewhere in the traditional Bordelais style. This bottling, crafted by Ramey Wine Cellars using a blend of 44% Cab Sauv/20% Merlot/14% Malbec/12% Petit Verdot/8% Syrah/2% Cab Franc sourced from Napa/Sonoma/Lake/Mendocino Counties, is a well made and delicious example of Claret with a California twist. Though perhaps a bit more ripe and fruit forward than an equivalent Bordeaux, this wine possesses a timeless combination of primarily red-fruited charm framed with gorgeous spices, earthy forest tones, and a bright bouquet of flowers. It is beautifully textured and complex while remaining delightfully fresh and balanced, and is drinking wonderful now. Very nice.
