2017 Morgaen Lee Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc - Protho Family Wines
Juicy passion fruit, sweet grass, lemon confit. Candied grapefruit, bird-of-paradise, white strawberry. Papaya slices and pink guava, sugar cane stalk and warm baking spices. Dripping tropical fruit, ripe peach, and citrus piled high atop fresh state-fair funnel cake. Flavorful but not fat; tightly bound together by a string of all important acidity. This 2017 Morgaen Lee Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc by Prothro Family Wines is summer vacation in a glass.
Prothro Family Wines is an ultra-boutique microproducer located in California's Napa Valley. They've sourced fruit from premier Napa vineyards to create a portfolio of high-end small production wines. Their emphasis on quality paired with a unique grassroots marketing approach has gained them a cult following and allowed them to sell out of literally every wine they make. This bottling, composed of 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Morgaen Lee Vineyard in Yountville, is a delicious and unique take on the variety. It is succulent and ripe but avoids the over-oaked "Fumé Blanc" profile so often associated with Napa SB. When considering its modest sticker price this may be the best value single-vineyard white wine we've had in recent memory. We're told this bottling is completely sold out, but keep an eye out for new vintages coming soon.
