2014 Twin Palms Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon - Poggi Wines
Black currant, eucalyptus leaf, ground coffee bean. Juicy black raspberry, blooming rose, nutmeg sprinkled baking chocolate. Roasted bell pepper and toasted coconut flake aromas waft from a tight core of dark fruit and sweet tobacco. A French vanilla mocha spilled onto gravel and dusty earth beneath a towering black cherry tree. This 2014 Twin Palms Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon by Poggi Wines is a micro-production Napa Cab that can swing with the big boys.
Poggi Wines is a truly tiny producer. Their home vineyard - the Twin Palms Vineyard - is a miniscule 1/4 acre plot located in the Calistoga AVA of Napa Valley. It is planted to primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot mixed in. While their production quantities may be small Poggi's quality rivals the best in the valley. This wine, which is actually a Bordeaux blend dominated by 85% Cab Sauv, is energetic and tense. It required significant air to show its colors and will probably need another 5-7 years to begin to peak, but is already fun to drink now. We ran it through our vSpin to help it open up more quickly which worked great, but expect a standard decant of 2-4 hours here. This bottle is proof that you don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy high quality Napa Cab.
