2016 Quadrille - Pegasus Estate Winery
Silky cassis, roasted tobacco, muddled blackberry. Damson plum, baking chocolate, black forest cherry. Dense violet and rose petal, cigar ash and anise liqueur. A fragrant and aromatic bouquet erupts with rich fruit, flowers, and spice, expressing saturated black currant and raspberry glaze along with potpourri and a delicate clove & vanilla medley. Tight and brooding on the palate spilling dark roast coffee and pen ink before revealing earthy and tense crushed gravel minerality. Masterfully balanced and not the slightest bit thick or heavy; pulsing with fresh acidity that keeps this full bodied high tannin wine extraordinarily fresh and lean. This 2016 Quadrille by Pegasus Estate Winery is a remarkably captivating and complex Bordeaux blend from Santa Barbara County.
Located in the heart of the Happy Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara County the Vogelzang Vineyard has emerged as a tremendous source for Bordeaux varieties. This bottling, crafted by Pegasus Estate Winery using a blend of 35% Cab Sauv/35% Petit Verdot/25% Cab Franc/5% Merlot all sourced from the Vogelzang Vineyard, is an unbelievable example of just how special this site is. This wine exudes magnificent aromatics and a sense of weightless density to go along with flawless typicity and laser-like precision. This has been masterfully crafted by Santa Barbara legend Ken Brown and exhibits a broader and more concentrated profile than the ethereal Pegasus Estate Cabernet. This is really impressive stuff that proves Santa Barbara can do Bordeaux grapes as well (or better) than any of California's premier regions.
