2016 “D’oro” - Patland Vineyards

Chocolate cherry cordial, aged brandy, gooey Medjool date. Blueberry pie, blooming violet, baked dark plum. A profoundly muscular and multidimensional display gushing with candied orange, fig paste, and blackberry jam leads a sinfully sweet and scintillating presentation packed with irresistible confectionary notes of butterscotch, toffee, and molasses. Hints of creme brulee, lava cake, and melted chocolate advance themes of incredible opulence as a mild suggestion of bramble provides a pinch of rugged flair. Wafts of rose petal and understated floral tones gently emerge to enhance aromatics yet are largely outshined by the luscious dessert-like profile. Monumentally rich, inky, and plush on the palate with layers of nicely developed complexity and a seductive satiny mouthfeel; exhibiting a powerful and fruit-driven presentation that is extremely concentrated yet still beautifully well balanced. Full bodied with moderate tannin backed by fresh acidity. This 2016 "D'oro" by Patland Vineyards is a decadent and luxurious dessert red from Napa Valley.

While Port from Portugal's Douro Valley is one of the most popular dessert wines on the planet, passionate producers from all over the world have reverently paid homage to those legendary wines and created delicious dessert wines in the classic Port style with their own unique regional twists. This bottling, crafted by Patland Vineyards using Petite Syrah sourced from within Napa Valley, is an extraordinary example of a complex and authentic Port-style wine from California. This generously gushes gobs of sweet dark fruits drizzled in rich chocolatey goodness, and now at 6 years of age is beginning to show impressive tertiary hints of butterscotch and toffee. This is absolutely delicious today yet surely has an incredibly long life ahead of it, and easily stands up against the best examples of this style made anywhere in the world. Outstanding.
