2014 Duvarita Vineyard Pinot Noir - Lagom
Juicy wild strawberry, tobacco leaf, Bing cherry. Pomegranate seeds, wet mushroom, tense blood orange. Wilted lavender and rose petal, peat moss and burning sage. Boysenberry, red plum, and cranberry concentrate firmly grip the wheel in a dense and fruit-laden initial attack, rising semi-weightlessly above layers of tilled soil and undergrowth. Pine cone, algae, and damp leaves advance an underlying earthy narrative aided by a lift from dried flowers and potpourri. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract emerge to add a nicely glossy oak sheen with bonuses of wood smoke and toast. Medium plus in both body and acidity with very mild tannin; showing some delicious tertiary development in the form slightly sanguine and gamy nuances. This 2014 Duvarita Vineyard Pinot Noir by Lagom is a delightfully balanced and complex cool climate red from one of Santa Barbara County's coldest vineyards.
Sitting west of the Santa Rita Hills just outside the town of Lompoc, the Duvarita Vineyard is one of the most windswept, coastal, and cold vineyard sites in all Santa Barbara. This bottling, crafted by Torrin under their Lagom label using Pinot Noir from the Duvarita Vineyard, is a fantastic example of what this extremely marginal site is capable of. While it contains plenty of plump California fruit in typical Torrin style this wine expresses tremendous cool climate earthy savoriness, and remains nicely in balance despite its great depth. Thanks to a bit of bottle age it is showing wonderful development that further increases the already elevated complexity. This is a unique and distinctive wine that beautifully expresses both terroir and premium winemaking.
