2020 Double L Vineyard Riesling - Morgan Winery

Juicy peach, loose gravel, sliced lime. Ripe green apple, blooming honeysuckle, fresh lychee. An extraordinarily expressive and energetic eruption of grapefruit zest, honeydew melon, and kiwi highlights a pure and remarkably pristine fruit core writhing with endlessly vibrant youthful intensity. Notes of wildflowers and peonies boisterously emerge to enhance aromatics with streaks of lifted floral perfume interlaced with a subtle yet intriguing impression of kerosene. Hints of mild salinity and stoney minerality provide glimpses of gorgeous coastal earthiness before a suggestion of raw honey playfully emerges on the finish. Beautifully tart, crisp, and zippy on the palate while coming across as straightforward yet delightfully layered; exhibiting a juicy and undeniably delicious presentation that is ever-so-slightly off-dry. Medium minus in body and brimming with high acidity. This 2020 Double L Vineyard Riesling by Morgan Winery is a bright and exciting white from the Santa Lucia Highlands.

Although widely planted throughout Europe as well as in many new world wine regions, Riesling remains surprisingly largely underrepresented throughout the cool climate vineyards of California's Central Coast. This bottling, crafted by Morgan Winery using Riesling from their estate Double L Vineyard in Monterey County's Santa Lucia Highlands, proves that Riesling can absolutely thrive in California's foggy and wind-swept coastal reaches. This wine effortlessly shines with expansive yet delicate stone, citrus, and tropical fruits backed by expressive floral tones, stony earth, petrol, and a wonderful honeyed sheen. Although delicious in its youth this has the potential to age just as well as the best old-world examples of the variety, and would make for an extremely interesting specimen to annually revisit as it develops in bottle. Excellent.
