2017 Müller-Thurgau - Enderle & Moll
Juicy tangerine, mint leaf, peeled peach skin. Fresh-picked apricot, candied ginger, cool grapefruit pith. Wild sunflowers and citrus blossom, sandy earth and calcareous rock. Orange slice, pineapple, and quince lead a deliciously tart, fresh, almost juice-like attack that drinks with both remarkable refreshment and complexity. Dandelion and peach blossom exude pretty yet thoroughly unpretentious florals that flutter among spicy ground turmeric and green tea. An earthy limestone-esque minerality sits beneath clean and lifted fruit contributing a sense multidemensionality to an otherwise mostly primary profile. Pure, high toned, and just a bit leesy; bursting with personality and subtle phenolics. Light bodied and dry on the palate with bright acidity. This 2017 Müller-Thurgau by Enderle & Moll is a brilliantly fun and interesting orange wine from Baden Germany.
Located in Southwestern Germany just across the border from Alsace, Baden is a unique winegrowing region home to some of the most daring and adventurous producers in the country. This bottling, crafted by Enderle & Moll using Müller-Thurgau sourced from Baden and fermented on its skins, is an wonderfully intriguing take on one of Germany's most widely planted white grapes. While certainly made in an unconventional style for the variety, the use of skin contact here has created a wine of outright deliciousness that expresses both gorgeous fruit and layered complexity. It is relatively low in alcohol at 11.5% ABV yet does not come off as thin or vapid, and instead seems to brighten the room with characterful and creative spunk. This is simply one of those wines that is impossible not to like, and we thoroughly enjoyed discovering it thanks to our friends at Rae Vino.
