2018 Presqu’ile Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc - Metrick Wines

Grapefruit flesh, wet grass, squeezed lime wedge. Fresh gooseberry, black currant bud, zingy green apple. Cool salt water and beach sand, young mint leaf and mowed lawn. Intense and energetic citrus-driven fruit explodes with tremendously crisp tartness, cutting deep by way of sharp lemon zest along with underripe peach and green pear. Elderflower and pungent florals writhe behind the piercing fruit, asserting their existence at every opportunity while grassy tones and asparagus vie for attention. Polished stone and river rocks slowly reveal subtle minerality followed by a distinct pinch of salinity that courses through the fierce and virulent attack. Medium minus in body with high acidity and an absolutely wonderful sense of pure unadulterated electricity. This 2017 Presqu'ile Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc by Metrick Wines is an awesomely intense, complex, and refreshing white from the Santa Maria Valley.

Cool climate Sauvignon Blanc is unquestionably one of the world's most popular white wines, yet for some reason very little of this special grape is planted in the coldest areas of California. This bottling, crafted by Metrick Wines using Sauvignon Blanc sourced from the Presqu'ile Vineyard in coastal Santa Barbara County, makes a compelling case for Sauvignon Blanc's compatibility with the more brisk parts of the Golden State. This wine is absolutely packed full of tart and vivacious citrus along with oodles of characterful pyrazines and contains a distinct Sancerre-esque edginess. It is fresh, focused, and alive, clearly spilling out both glitzy flash and complex substance. This is a wonderful wine created by a tiny producer from what might be one of the best cool climate Sauvignon Blanc vineyards in the state. Discovered thanks to our friends the Tasting Merchants.
