2018 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon - Metas Altas
Warm boysenberry pie, young cedar, chocolate cherry cordial. Pomegranate extract, crushed violet, black currant preserve. Unabashedly rich and ripe pulses of blackberry reduction, raspberry syrup, and baked plum highlight a jammy and fruit-driven display subtly enhanced by notes of tobacco, mint leaf, and black coffee. Substantial bursts of iris and potpourri emerge to reveal a dense floral overlay bolstered in implied sweetness by suggestions of toasted marshmallow and melted chocolate. Wafts of dill, clove, nutmeg, and thyme present integrated wafts of spice that are offset by rugged impressions of hot asphalt and petrichor. Bold, friendly, and forward on the palate with plenty of plump and primary fruitiness; exhibiting a direct and crowd-friendly style ready now for immediate enjoyment. Full bodied with medium tannin supported by moderate acidity. This 2018 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon by Metas Altas is a generous, clean, and unpretentious red from California's central coast.
While it is perhaps best known as the home of some of California's greatest expressions of Rhone varieties; Paso Robles has simultaneously established a firm reputation as a source for high quality Bordeaux-style wines. This bottling, crafted by Metas Altas using Cabernet Sauvignon plus a bit of Merlot grown in Paso Robles, showcases the ripe and fruit-forward style that has made Paso Cabernet such a massive consumer favorite. This wine centers around a lush and viscous core of sweet and baked berry fruits complemented by floral tones, mild herbs, and subtle spices. It is certainly ripe and high in alcohol yet avoids coming across as heavy or cloying, instead remaining fun, friendly, and solidly in balance. This is a well executed first vintage from a brand new Paso producer.
