Cellar - Melville Winery

Melville Winery is one of the stalwarts of the Santa Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County California. Family owned since its founding in 1989, Melville consistently produces high quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from their 3 estate vineyard parcels located off Highway 246. While Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have long been common to the region Melville was one of the first wineries in Santa Rita Hills to begin large-scale experimention with ultra cool climate Syrah plantings.

Melville's red wines in particular are exceptionally unique to Santa Barbara. They utilize high percentages of stem inclusion during fermentation which adds robust woody & spicy undertones to both their Pinot Noir and Syrah. Their reds are aged strictly in neutral oak barrels allowing for a more intense expression of these spiced notes without adding too much roundness or softness. Melville's reds tend to be intensely perfumed in their youth often exhibiting black pepper and spice box aromas. The pronounced acidity and structure of the wines also allows them to age phenomenally well, and they can often be enjoyed decades from vintage date. Melville keeps an extensive library collection of older vintages in their cellar which are often popped open and enjoyed during special events and club member parties. Stylistically Melville's wines are a cross between old-world earthiness and new-world fruit and are sure to excite and delight the discerning palate.
