2017 White Hill Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay - Liquid Farm
Squeezed lemon, frothy ocean waves, Granny Smith apple. Cantaloupe rind, blooming jasmine, underripe white peach. Honeysuckle and citrus blossom, Greek yogurt and fresh sourdough. Grapefruit pith, citrus peel, and tart Anjou pear zing with laser-like focus and intensity, instantaneously matched in gusto by highly saline verve and chalky minerality. Biscuit crumbs add a unique leesy edge softened slightly by lively florals. Fluffy sawdust and vanilla wafer point to time spend in neutral wood while retaining incredible energy, crispness, and zip. Extraordinarily precise - showcasing astounding purity and classic nuance bathed in salty coastal air. Balanced, bright, brilliant, and barely medium in body; exuding impressive tartness backed by high acidity. This 2017 "White Hill" Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay by Liquid Farm is an extraordinary ode to Chablis from arguably Santa Barbara's greatest Chardonnay house.
Despite sitting on almost opposite sides of a globe Chablis and Santa Barbara's Santa Rita Hills have a great deal in common. Both regions boast extraordinarily cool climates and both contain soils high in calcium left over from their time as spent shallow ocean floor. This bottling, crafted by Liquid Farm using Chardonnay sourced from within the Santa Rita Hills, exhibits just how similar the wines from these two regions can be. This impressive wine is a pent up ball of citrus-infused lightening bolts complete with screaming acidity and amazingly saline chalky character. It is remarkably crisp, focused, and precise, with just enough roundness to keep it from coming off as overly linear or one-dimensional. This is a perfectly executed and exceptionally delicious offering from an incredible producer, and easily holds up against the great wines of Chablis.
