2018 “Soph” - Law Estate Wines
Fresh guava, pulverized rock, juicy pineapple. Sweet honeydew melon, powdered cinnamon, succulent peach. A plump and expressive parade of lemon meringue, orange peel, papaya, and poached apple decadently converges with chalk dust, lanolin, and gardenias in an extraordinarily deep, textured, and layered attack. Aromatic hints of vanilla, nutmeg, and clove swiftly emerge emitting soft yet far-reaching baking spice alongside waves of juicy florals including honeysuckle, plumeria, and jasmine. Notes of hazelnut, crème brûlée, and warm honey expose shiny glimmers of opulence offset by complex impressions of crushed limestone and cheese rind in a surprising delightfuly earthy and leesy twist. Intriguingly rich yet mineral on the palate with a muscular yet energetic mouthfeel; simultaneously exhibiting both elegance and might along with impressive weight, focus, and precision. Full bodied yet taut while supported by nicely elevated acidity. This 2018 "Soph" by Law Estate Wines is an impressively well-built, powerful, and serious white from the Adelaida District of Paso Robles.
Although primarily known as a source for some of California's most robust and expressive red wine, the limestone-riddled hills of Paso Robles also quietly produce a range of equally complex and compelling whites. This bottling, crafted by Law Estate Wines using 49% Roussanne/26% Marsanne/25% Clairette Blache sourced from their estate vineyard in Paso Robles, proves that Paso's power and pedigree is not limited to only its reds. Crafted in a full-throttle yet balanced style, this wine bursts from the glass with ripe tropical fruit and florals interwoven with captivating hints of calcareous earth drizzled with a lightly honeyed sheen. It is rich yet not slightest bit heavy and powerful while remaining remarkably pretty, all while admirably supported by excellent acidity and freshness. This is truly a unique and delicious wine.
