Raspberry preserves, briny green olive, yellow cherry. Red currant, fresh mushroom, delicate peach blossom. Greek yogurt and baking spice, cool granite and damp mossy forest floor. Dainty yet expressive with a distinct natural undertone. Like a ripe wild strawberry pulled from the dirt in all its funky native yeasty glory. This 2012 Tschuppen Spätburgunder by Ziereisen is a quirky and charming German Pinot Noir.

Hanspeter Ziereisen masterfully crafts terroir driven wines from his small estate in the Baden region of southwestern Germany. His specialty is single vineyard Pinot Noir. This "Tschuppen" bottling is his most feminine offering and comes in at a mere 12.5% ABV. It is processed naturally with minimal intervention and surprisingly saw almost 2 years on lees in neutral oak - which has served to mellow the acidity and add a touch of roundness. At 6 years from vintage this wine still feels quite young and will undoubtedly continue to mature and develop. It is fun, fruity, funky, and delicious. German Pinot Noir is stepping into a well-deserved spotlight and it's time to take notice of you haven't yet.
