2018 Estate Vineyard Gewürztraminer - Gundlach Bundschu
Canned Georgia peach, sweet orchids, tender lychee. Juicy Anjou Pear, river stones, lemon hard candy. Fragrant jasmine and plumeria, raw almond and tropical fern. A dramatic bouquet of passionfruit and candied citrus erupt in juicy delight, spewing ripe honeydew, fruit cocktail, and pronounced floral tones in delicious unrestrained decadence. Subtle flint and fresh ginger lie cowering beneath the broad initial approach slowly revealing traces of themselves upon careful deliberation. A dash of white pepper makes a fleeting appearance before salt lick and rocky minerality complete the attack. Tart and dry on the palate despite tremendous succulence, maintaining great tension and focus throughout its high-toned and action-packed performance. Squarely medium plus in body and acidity. This 2018 Estate Vineyard Gewürztraminer by Gundlach Bundschu Winery is a tremendously interesting and remarkably characterful aromatic white from the Sonoma Coast.
Gundlach Bundschu's estate vineyard sits just east of the town of Sonoma. The lower portions of the property see significant cooling influence from the nearby San Pablo Bay, while the higher reaches creep up into the Mayacamas Mountains and are much warmer. This bottling, crafted by Gundlach Bundschu using Gewürztraminer sourced from the coolest parts of their vineyard, is an impressive take on one of the world's most expressive grapes. Its lifted and expansive aromatics are powerful enough to fill a room yet it still drinks with nice tartness and beautiful crispness. This wine is a great example of the diversity of Sonoma County and the Gundlach Bundschu estate in particular, as it is able to retain gorgeous cool climate aromatic character despite being grown on the same property as Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. A tremendously unique and delicious bottle.
