2015 Pietrarizzo Etna Rosso - Tornatore
Spiced cranberry, peeled tree bark, juicy sour cherry. Crunchy black raspberry, fresh poinsettia, mandarin orange. Cumin powder and dried oregano, candied rose and potpourri. A brilliantly spiced and pure-fruited bouquet teaming with wild strawberry, coriander, and pomegranate erupts immediately with tremendous vibrancy and lift, refusing to slow down amid bright natural tones of pine needle, evergreen, and dried flowers. Porous basalt and iron are viscerally felt in a barrage of pronounced volcanic minerality that courses violently yet pleasantly through the lively and expressive attack. Cinnamon, paprika, and cayenne impart an additional dusting of spices while sage and rhubarb provide one last hit of tart herbal radiance. Beautifully complex and aromatic while remaining impressively fresh, crunchy, and energetic. Medium plus in body, tannin, and acidity. This 2015 "Pietrarizzo" Etna Rosso by Tornatore is an incredibly interesting, nuanced, and terroir expressive Sicilian red.
Located on the island of Sicily in south-western Italy, Mount Etna rises up to nearly 11,000 feet of elevation and is one of the world's most active volcanoes. This bottling, crafted by Tornatore using 100% Norello Mascalese sourced from the Etna DOC at the foothills of Mount Etna, is a magnificent expression of what the slopes of this powerful and imposing volcano can produce. Southern Italy's warm sunshine filled climate has bestowed this wine with ample concentration and structure, yet high elevation and young basaltic soils have shaped it with weightless aromatics and intense minerality that are unmatched the world over. This wine is simultaneously delicate yet powerful, subtle yet substantial, and rustic yet riveting. A truly intriguing and impactful beauty from a region that many consider to be one of Italy's most exciting and dynamic.
