Carmenere - Dubost Winery
Muddled mint leaves, black plum skin, black licorice. Chopped celery, bruised black cherry, and just a hint of fresh cilantro. Tip-toeing the line ever so delicately between dark fruit and zesty pyrazines, this wine is extraordinarily interesting. The 2014 Dubost Colbert Vineyard Carmenere is a wonderfully delicious and intriguing wine that paired absolutely perfectly with Carne Asada Fajitas.
Carmenere is an esoteric old varietal that originated in Bordeaux but was all but wiped out with the onset of phylloxera in the 19th century. It accidentally gained new life in Chile when producers planted it thinking it was Merlot, but it is rarely seen elsewhere in the world. This adaptation from Paso Robles by Dubost is so unique that we knew we had to get our hands on some. We're glad we did!
Dubost Winery is a small family run operation in Paso Robles. During our visit to their tasting room it became clear that this is a REAL family run winery. You can feel the love put into every bottle they make and they are extremely welcoming. The matriarch, Kate, joined right in on our tasting and gave us an impromptu tour of the grounds where we got an intimate look at the barrel room and the new tasting room which was still under construction. Not only are they great people, but their wine is wonderful as well! Dubost Winery is a hidden gem that deserves to be unearthed and enjoyed by everyone.
