2020 “Band of Stones” Grüner Vetliner - Cadre Wines
Lime juice, struck flint, underripe pear. Tart green apple, sea spray, sour green grapes. A strikingly nervy and electric barrage of lemon flesh, grapefruit zest, and kiwi booms with impressive crispness and crunch within a zippy and beautifully acid-driven attack. Notes of crushed stones and salt immediately emerge to reveal pronounced mineral undertones while hints of arugula, wild herbs, and chives provide intriguing lightly vegital charms. Whispers of white pepper and mustard seed expose delicate yet delightful spices that intertwine with dainty floral tones of water lilies and white blossoms. Marvelously fresh and feisty on the palate with an interesting lightly phenolic textural edge; exhibiting an intense and tightly-wound presentation that remains beautifully layered and complex despite its tanginess and bite. Medium bodied and bursting with powerful acidity. This 2020 "Band of Stones" Grüner Veltliner by Cadre Wines is an energetic and exciting white from the Edna Valley.
Long known as an outstanding terroir for cool climate wines like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, San Luis Obispo's Edna Valley has recently seen a number of new and unique grape varieties being planted and thriving in its marine-influenced soils. This bottling, crafted by Cadre Wines using Grüner Veltliner sourced from a single block of the Paragon Vineyard in the Edna Valley, proves that Grüner is a natural fit in California's Central Coast. This wine playfully presents a tart and explosive citrus-led fruit profile coursing with intense salty and stoney minerality, which serves to perfectly captures the foggy coastal nature of Edna Valley's rugged landscape. This wine is extremely fun to enjoy today for those who enjoy high acid whites, and it should also continue to develop in bottle and drink well for at least another 3-5 years. Wonderful.
