2019 "Béton" Concrete Chardonnay - Brick Barn Wine Estate

Apple cobbler, crushed rocks, orange zest. Mexican papaya, yellow rose, pear cider. Cascading waves of beautifully ripe and luscious fruit highlighted by mango and lemon bar undulate with juicy and succulent richness within a generously fruit-driven display. Notes of orchard blossom and honeysuckle reveal glimpses of delicate floral aromatics complicated by subtle herbal and natural tones of white sage and hay bale. Hints of honey and pastry crust provide integrated pinches of decadence offset by intruding earthy tones of sandy soil, concrete dust, and stony minerality. Tremendously expressive, forward, and bright on both the nose and palate while maintaining excellent complexity and depth; exhibiting a delicious and uniquely layered presentation complete with a wonderfully textured mouthfeel. Full bodied and balanced nicely by moderate acidity. This 2019 "Béton" Concrete Chardonnay by Brick Barn Wine Estate is an unconventional and fun white from Santa Barbara's Santa Ynez Valley.

Although it is most commonly aged in either oak barrels or stainless steel tanks, Chardonnay is becoming more frequently subjected to aging in concrete vessels which allow for miniscule amounts of oxygenation without imparting any oak flavors on the wine. This bottling, crafted by Brick Barn Wine Estate using Chardonnay grown at their Santa Ynez Valley estate vineyard and aged in concrete, showcases the unique balance of texture and energy that concrete aging can impart on a wine. Though it is crafted in a fruit-forward style bursting with tropical, orchard, and citrus fruits, this wine boasts intriguing stony flavor and textural components that beautifully balance its ripeness. This is perfectly ready to open and enjoy today, and it will likely hold well for 3-5 years. Very Nice.
