2020 Vellutini Ranch Vineyard Zinfandel - Martinelli Winery
A thrillingly rich yet lively procession of wild huckleberry, sweet strawberry, boysenberry preserves, and black liquorice abounds with a unique combination of energy and plumpness while intriguing notes of cracked black pepper and jalapeño enthusiastically provide a deliciously spicy twist. Hints of anise, clove, and cinnamon gently reveal an interesting herbal dimension that intertwines with mildly opulent suggestions of coffee bean and dark chocolate. Interesting wafts of French lavender and desert rose impart effortless floral lift that rises above pleasantly rugged suggestions of bramble, underbrush, and sedimentary soils. Perfectly bold yet balanced on the palate with admirable depth while remaining light on its feet; exhibiting a terrifically complex and concentrated presentation that comes across as surprisingly fresh and elegant despite its substantial muscle. Medium-plus bodied with moderate tannin cut by bright acidity. This 2020 Vellutini Ranch Vineyard Zinfandel by Martinelli Winery is an exciting and terroir expressive red from the Russian River Valley.
Although today it is largely known for its Pinot Noir, Sonoma's Russian River Valley has a long history of Zinfandel production and thanks to its cool climate can help shape a unique and delicious style of this well-loved grape. This bottling, crafted by Martinelli Winery using Zinfandel grown at their estate Vellutini Ranch vineyard, proves that the RRV is one of California's greatest terroirs for Zin. This powerfully yet elegantly spills a gorgeous range of black, blue, and red berry fruits enhanced by peppery spiciness, anise-led herbs, attractive floral tones, brambly earthiness, and tastefully toasted oak. Although already incredible upon release this boasts the structure to improve in bottle for at least another 7-10 years, and should continue to drink well for decades. Wow.
