2020 “Highland” Chardonnay - Morgan Winery
An irresistibly plump and succulent procession of yellow apple, peach cobbler, sweet pineapple, and lemon meringue pie highlights a generous and beautifully expressive display gently layered with a range of elegant barrel spices including cinnamon, vanilla, and coriander. Notes of ocean fog and saline minerality proudly announce the presence of clean coastal earthy character that cuts through lightly decadent suggestions of whipped cream, cashew, and French baguette. Delicate wafts of jasmine and honeysuckle bolster aromatics via pretty floral fragrance while mildly reductive flinty hints help keep things tense and balanced. Delightfully round, forward, and fruit-driven on the palate while still managing to maintain exciting energy and zip; exhibiting a plush yet thoroughly pretty presentation that boasts excellent complexity within its classically Californian stylings. Medium-plus bodied and supported by bright acidity. This 2020 "Highland" Chardonnay by Morgan Winery is a bold yet vibrant white from Monterey's Santa Lucia Highlands.
Thanks to consistent daily sunshine that is combatted each afternoon by cold ocean winds and fog from the nearby Monterey Bay, the Santa Lucia Highlands are blessed to be able to shape some of California's most delicious Chardonnay that possesses voluptuous roundness alongside surprising energy and freshness. This bottling, crafted by Morgan Winery using Chardonnay sourced completely from within the Santa Lucia Highlands, is an extremely compelling example of this region's unique flavor profile. This gleefully erupts with a medley of juicy stone, orchard, citrus, and tropical fruits enhanced by tasteful oak influence, aromatic floral tones, distinctly coastal earthy qualities, and well-integrated creaminess. It is extremely approachable and ready to drink immediately, yet should easily hold well for at least 3-5 years. Excellent.
