2019 “SY/PS” - Ultima Tulie Wines

An enormously powerful yet plush explosion of mulberry pie, succulent dark plum, blueberry jam, and chocolate cherry cordial booms with ripe and rambunctious intensity while complicating notes of asphalt, crushed rocks, and charred brisket impart an intriguingly meaty and rugged edge. Pronounced impressions of bramble, anise, eucalyptus, and black pepper proudly reveal a range of spicy herbal qualities softened only slightly by a dusting of cinnamon, vanilla, clove, and and almost-creamy oak tones. Wafts of potpourri and violet extract contribute dense floral character interlaced with lingering impressions of burnt caramel and smoke. Massively dense, chewy, and mouth-filling on the palate with excellent complexity found within its next-level amplitude; exhibiting a full throttle and unctuous presentation that combines gobs of jammy fruit with wonderfully complex savory nuances. Enormously full bodied with thick tannin kept surprisingly fresh by balanced acidity. This 2019 "SY/PS" by Ultima Tulie Wines is a rich and densely extracted red from California's Central Coast.

Notable for having warm and sunny days that are combated daily by cold and fog-drenched nights, Paso Robles boasts incredible diurnal range that makes it uniquely capable of producing wines with serious ripeness that remain perfectly balanced. This bottling, crafted by Ultima Tulie Wines using a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah sourced from a combination of Paso Robles and the Edna Valley, is an impressively bold example of the sheer weight and magnitude this region is capable of bestowing in its wines. This unabashedly broods with saturated dark fruits challenged for dominance by smoky rugged notes, peppery spices, dried herbs, and well balanced new oak. It is a muscular and assertive wine that could benefit from 3-5 years of mellowing in the cellar, yet can be enjoyed now for those looking for maximum intensity and power. Excellent.
