2019 “Hollister” Edna Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir - Tolosa Winery
Radiant waves of hauntingly high-toned fruit led by Bing cherry, juicy blueberry, spiced cranberry, and succulent pomegranate highlight an expansive and impressively ethereal display layered with perfumed floral tones of lavender and wildflowers. Notes of crushed pine cone, forest floor, and bramble gently contribute excitingly complex organic character while hints of new leather, dried seaweed, and iron reveal captivating flecks of umami. An intriguing range of spices including coriander, nutmeg, and cinnamon expose beautifully integrated and highly-polished oak influence that serves to enhance the fruit-driven yet nicely savory attack. Brilliantly lifted and expressive on the nose while coming across as pretty, juicy, and seductively smooth on the palate; exhibiting an age-worthy yet approachable presentation that possesses rare weightless power and an unmistakable sense of class. Medium-plus bodied with moderate tannin supported by fresh acidity. This 2019 "Hollister" Edna Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir by Tolosa Winery is a dazzlingly complex and elegant red from San Luis Obispo's Edna Valley.
Although there are a number of winegrowing regions around the world that can produce high-quality Pinot Noir, few places can replicate the unmistakable fruit-driven aromatics of Pinot grown in the premier areas of California's famed Central Coast. This bottling, crafted by Tolosa Winery using Pinot Noir sourced from the Hollister block of their estate Edna Ranch Vineyard, is an outstanding example of the heights of aromatic brilliance that great Central Coast Pinot can achieve. This effortlessly booms with gobs of exciting red and blue fruits complicated by fragrant floral tones, forest-led organic charms, gorgeous spice notes, pleasant umami, and textbook coastal earthiness. Although absolutely incredible today this boasts sufficient structure to age for a decade or more, which will likely allow its non-fruit flavors to blossom further. Excellent.
